Families and teachers are opposing a sweeping change to Indigenous education in School District 8 that would replace teachers with support workers ahead of the fall semester.
The district plans to reassign teachers currently working in the Aboriginal Education program in elementary and middle schools. Those teachers would be placed into regular classroom roles, while the district will hire education assistants called Indigenous support workers.
Laury Carrière, SD8’s director of instruction for Indigenous Education and Learning Services, said the model is already in place within Creston-area schools as well as most other B.C. school districts.
