Southern Chiefs’ Organization Inc.: Call for Volunteer Oversight Committee Members – Elder Members

The Southern Chiefs’ Organization Inc., has opportunities for 2 Elder volunteer Oversight Committee Members for the Protecting Our Women Project in the Violence Prevention and Safety Planning Department.

Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) representing 32 southern First Nations in Manitoba has been granted project funding through Status of Women Canada under their theme of “Working in Partnership to End Violence against Women and Girls”.

The Southern Chiefs’ Organization has undertaken a three year project titled, Protecting Our Women. The main goal of this project is to work with the southern First Nations and community stakeholders in the City of Winnipeg to develop a community safety plan for Aboriginal women and girls moving to or residing in Winnipeg.

Main objectives of this project are:

  1. To help change socially constructed attitudes and perceptions about Aboriginal women among service providers, Aboriginal peoples themselves, and the general public as they continue to perpetuate violence and create institutional barriers to access resources.
  2. To empower Aboriginal women to take individual and community action to end violence against women within their community and in Winnipeg through the development of a safety plan.

The Oversight Committee will guide the process of developing a Safety Plan and Toolkit for the Protecting Our Women Project through advisory and consultation practices.

The Oversight Committee will consist of a maximum of nine members serving a term ending in June 2018 with two seats designated for Elders and two seats designated for Youth. Consideration will be given to the appointment of Committee members who reflect the diversity of southern First Nations’ membership and the skills and experience appropriate to the project’s objectives.
