Quebec City, November 2015 – The French Consulate General in Quebec City is pleased to present this invitation to a gathering on Friday, November 13 at 11 a.m. at the Musée des Beaux-arts de Montréal with Professor Patrice Alexandre, Cécilia Breuil and Anaïs Ang, three French artists returning from Aupaluk in Nunavik where they were in residence from October 23 to November 11, 2015.
The first component of this Nunavik–France exchange for visual arts artists is covered under the agreement signed in Paris on March 4, 2015, by Hélène David, Québec Minister of Culture and Communications and Minister responsible for the Protection and Promotion of the French Language.
A unique cultural experience, the in-residence exchange took place in Aupaluk, an Inuit community in Nunavik, located on the west shore of Ungava Bay, during the 2015 annual Nunavik arts workshop, which brought together close to 40 Inuit artists from communities around Québec’s arctic region north of the 55th parallel.
“This artistic exchange will permit rich and productive interactions between our young artists, beginning this year. It is an unparalleled opportunity to foster cross-cultural dialogue. We hope that this first initiative represents the start of a long working relationship,” statedNicolasChibaeff, the French Consul General in Quebec City. The project’s second component will see two Inuit artists travel to the ENSBA in Paris in the spring of 2016. The organization of joint exhibits is one of the targeted deliverables of this initiative.
The Conseil des arts et lettres du Québec, the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-arts de Paris (ENSBA), the Avataq Cultural Institute and the French Consulate General in Quebec City are the main partners of the project, which also receives support from the Kativik Regional Government. Other project participants include the Québec Ministère de la Culture et des Communications, the Northern Village of Aupaluk, Air Inuit, the Makivik Corporation and Nunavik Creations.
