Province Announces 2015 Manitoba Excellence in Sustainability Award Winners

The recipients of the 2015 Manitoba Excellence in Sustainability Awards were announced today by Conservation and Water Stewardship Minister Tom Nevakshonoff.
“These awards bring well-deserved recognition to individuals, organizations, communities and businesses that are enhancing sustainability in our province,” said Minister Nevakshonoff. “Congratulations to these award winners for their hard work, and for taking action and creating awareness of sustainable development.”
The minister said TomorrowNow – Manitoba’s Green Planhighlights sustainability issues and this year’s award winners demonstrate that private- and public-sector organizations are actively promoting sustainability in Manitoba. This year’s award for outstanding achievement went to FortWhyte Alive. FortWhyte Alive is an environmental and sustainable living centre that teaches and demonstrates the cornerstones of sustainability. It provides environmental education, natural and cultural heritage programs and outdoor recreation opportunities. FortWhyte Alive has been working to enhance the sustainability of its operations through actions and targets to increase sustainability in energy, emissions and transportation, water use, waste diversion and procurement.
Other notable award winners include:
- Aki Energy, Winnipeg – action on climate change, air quality and energy efficiency;
- Skownan First Nation, Skownan – sustainability in water and natural area stewardship;
- Lake Friendly, South Basin Mayors and Reeves, Winnipeg – sustainability in pollution prevention and product stewardship;
- Sigurbjorg Stefansson School, Gimli – education for sustainability;
- Village of Dunnottar – innovation and research for sustainability;
- Stantec, Winnipeg – champion for sustainability; and
- NorWest Community Food Centre, Winnipeg – sustainable community.
The Manitoba Round Table for Sustainable Development is an advisory board that provides advice and support to the provincial government about responsible resource management, land use and environmental, social and economic development and is responsible for nominating champions of the environment and sustainability in Manitoba.
The Manitoba Excellence in Sustainability Awards honour people, projects and ideas that successfully turn the province’s principles and guidelines of sustainable development into concrete and lasting achievements.
