Key Activities

  1. Reviewing regulatory notices to determine which oil company applications could potentially impact Indian lands, and bringing these issues to the attention of senior staff.
  2. Assisting engineering and other technical staff in the review of operators’ records to ensure compliance with governmental, regulatory and contractual requirements.
  3. Maintaining current record of Indian lands offset by non-Indian interest wells; investigating and classifying boundary spacing units, and bringing potential drainage situations to the attention of the engineers and land negotiators.
  4. Producing lease maps for the organization using computer mapping software and IOGC’s relational database management system; creating custom maps for IOGC staff and Bands using various electronic data sources and computer graphics software.
  5. Ensuring that treaty land entitlement and other reserve land boundary descriptors are maintained for computer mapping purposes.
  6. Setting up well files for all new wells including the input of well log images into computer log software; maintaining custody of confidential well files for the appropriate period; ensuring companies provide all information and documents required by the regulations; compiling statistical drilling data for management reporting purposes and providing activity report of drilling status on Indian lands; calculating properties from well logs for input to hydrocarbon inventory updates.
  7. Obtaining process flow diagrams, meter schematics and other relevant information from companies (which describe how Indian royalty production is routed through and measured at surface production facilities) and maintaining files containing this information to assist staff performing production audit work.
  8. Maintaining production entities within IOGC’s relational database management system.

Additional InformationThis position provides technical support to the Production Division. There is a requirement to advise and communicate information on oil and gas operations to IOGC staff.

This position also provides mapping services to the entire IOGC organization. As the land base becomes larger with the growing number of land entitlements, the demand for mapping services increases as well.

Petroleum Technician

Essential Qualifications

Education:
Completion of a technical certificate or diploma program related to the petroleum industry from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Occupational Certification:
Membership in the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET) as a C.Tech (Certified Technician).

Experience:
Substantial experience in or related to the upstream petroleum industry.
*Experience is normally acquired through a minimum of 7 years related experience which includes 2 or more years of progressive experience fulfilling typical petroleum technician duties as described by ASET.

Knowledge:
Knowledge of principles, practices and procedures regarding petroleum exploration and production.
Knowledge of Indian Oil and Gas Canada.
Knowledge of provincial acts, regulations and directives pertaining to the oil industry.
Knowledge of upstream petroleum industry.

Ability:
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Ability to evaluate data, identify options and make recommendations.
Ability to be thorough and accurate when performing technical work.
Ability to use computer software applications including MS Word and Excel.

Asset Qualifications:
Experience working for a regulatory agency.
Experience in oil and gas field operations.
