EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY The Union of Nova Scotia Indians EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Location: Membertou, Nova Scotia Position Overview: Reporting to the Union of Nova Scotia Indians (UNSI) Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the UNSI programs and staff. The Executive Director upholds the integrity and mandate of the UNSI Board of Directors by participating with the Board to develop a vision and strategic plan to guide the organization; identify, assess and inform the Board of internal and external issues; provide the board with regular reports on the activities, revenues and expenditures; and to provide capacity development guidance to member communities. Specific Duties include but are not limited to the following: • Human Resources and Management by providing leadership and direction for team members; o Overseeing the implementation of policies, procedures and practices including review and development of job descriptions, evaluations, discipline, development, and occupational health and safety. • Board of Directors; o Reports and recommendations, o Strategic planning and implementation of mandates, o Chairs Board of Directors meetings and Annual General Assembly, o Communication and discussions with the Board of Directors. • Finance by overseeing the preparation of the yearly budget; o Securing adequate funding for the operation of the organization, o Approving expenditures within the authority delegated by the Board, o Ensuring that booking keeping procedures are followed, o Administering the funds of the organization, o Ensure reporting. Qualifications • University Degree in relevant discipline or equivalent relevant work experience required; • 5-10 years experience in senior management; • The ability to speak and understand the Mi’kmaw language is preferred. Skills and Abilities • Knowledge of leadership and management principles; • Experience with Indigenous community engagement at a national, regional, provincial or community level is required – Mi’kmaq preferred; • Detailed-oriented excellent analytical, problem solving and decision making skills; • Excellent interpersonal skills and strong communication skills; • Result-oriented with the ability to prioritize and identify key initiatives; • Proficient with Email, Internet, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel; • Access to a reliable vehicle is required; • A valid driver’s license and automobile insurance is required. Salary: To be negotiated based on the successful candidate’s credentials and experience.
