Canada Research Chair in Urban Indigenous Policy
The University of Winnipeg invites applications from outstanding scholars with a strong research profile for a Tier I Canada Research Chair in Urban Indigenous Policy. The University of Winnipeg’s Strategic Directions, and Integrated Academic and Research Plan have established Indigenization as a critical element of our academic and institutional renewal. The University of Winnipeg is a downtown hub noted for academic excellence, Indigenous scholarship, environmental commitment, small class sizes and campus diversity.
This Tier I Canada Research Chair will explore urban policy within a broad context that may include but are not limited to the following: Indigenous government structures and formal and informal Indigenous political organizations; treaty, human, non-human and other relations in cities; urban Indigenous organizations, services and political activity; Indigenous ways of knowing and decision making; Indigenous research methodologies, colonial policy, exclusion and racism and their impact on Indigenous government (including “recognition”) and urban experience; Indigenous sovereignty and cities; race, space and mapping/remapping cities; patriarchy and Indigenous feminism and governance; city governance, reconciliation and Indigenization; historical and contemporary issues in the fields of fostering, adoption and child welfare, housing, law, and Indigenous foods and food politics in urban areas; Indigenous ethics; Indigenous language education; cities and Indigenous “resurgence”; Indigenous education (ECE/daycares, elementary, secondary, post-secondary); Indigenous health; historic and contemporary urban Indigenous communities; legal governance frameworks; social and economic capacity-building and development within urban communities.
The Tier I Canada Research Chair in Urban Indigenous Policy is expected to engage regularly with Indigenous scholarship and to disseminate their work to Indigenous communities. The successful candidate will have a sense of their own Indigenous identity, a strong relationship to their Indigenous nation, and a demonstrated ability to incorporate these in their research and teaching at the University of Winnipeg. S/He will be expected to teach at the graduate and/or undergraduate level, supervise graduate students, and develop and contribute to collaborations with fellow researchers throughout Canadaand abroad.
Tier I nominees should:
- Hold a PhD or equivalent qualification
- Be a Full Professor or Associate Professor who is expected to be promoted to the full professor level within one or two years of the nomination
- Be an internationally recognized Indigenous scholar with a strong record of publications and/or a strong record of equivalent recognition including activity among Indigenous peer scholars and/or in Indigenous knowledge platforms.
- Have a solid history of attracting competitive research funding, and experience in developing interdisciplinary research partnerships and approaches
- Contribute regularly to Indigenous scholarly communities and networks
- Be an outstanding and innovative world-class researcher whose accomplishments have made a major impact in their field
- Have a superior record of attracting and supervising students at all levels
- Be proposing original, innovative research programs and using methods of the highest quality
Previous involvement in collaborating with government departments and agencies, non-government organizations, and private sector partners is also desirable.
Nominations must include a curriculum vitae and a statement of research objectives. The statement should be a maximum of 3 pages (single spaced) using Times New Roman, size 12 font.
