Study: Economic impact of COVID-19 among Indigenous people

A new study provides insights on the financial and employment impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on Indigenous participants in a recent crowdsourcing data collection initiative. The study also reports on levels of trust regarding decisions to reopen workplaces and public spaces.

Among participants who were employed prior to the pandemic, 37% of Indigenous participants experienced job loss or reduced work hours, compared with 35% of non-Indigenous participants.

In addition, 36% of Indigenous participants reported that the COVID-19 pandemic had a strong or moderate impact on their ability to meet their financial obligations or essential needs, compared with 25% of non-Indigenous participants.

Among participants who reported a strong or moderate financial impact of COVID-19, 44% of Indigenous participants applied for federal income support, compared with 50% of non-Indigenous participants.
