Fort McKay ceremony celebrates start of new fire hall construction

Press Release

(Fort McKay, AB, July 16, 2020) – A groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction of a new fire hall for Fort McKay was held on July 7.

Representatives from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) were joined by representatives of the Fort McKay First Nation (FMFN) and Fort McKay Métis Nation (FMMN) at the new fire hall site to officially launch the construction of the new facility.

The new fire hall will safely house equipment and provide suitable space for firefighter training. It will include four apparatus bays, modern offices and training areas, a fitness room, asphalt parking stalls, and more.

“This is an important project for the people and community of Fort McKay. Above all, it’s an investment in the future of our people, community and region,” said Deputy Mayor Jane Stroud. “This project is also a special one for our Council because it reflects our commitment to rural and Indigenous communities. The Municipality’s Strategic Plan identified Rural and Indigenous Partnerships and Communities as a key priority—and this project not only supports that goal, but really puts it into action.”

“I want to extend my appreciation from the community on a job well done with a combined effort from the RMWB, the Fort McKay Métis Nation and our First Nation jointly working together,” said Fort McKay First Nation Chief Mel Grandjamb. “We have received a lot of support. I’m very satisfied with the RMWB council and with the commitment from our volunteer fire department.”

“This new hall signifies the next step in fire protection, not just for the community of Fort McKay, but for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo,” said Fort McKay Métis Nation President Ron Quintal. “It is so important that we put these shovels in the ground today. I am grateful for what we have been able to achieve in terms of our fire service. This is another stepping stone in creating the unity and infrastructure the community of Fort McKay needs.”

“This fire hall will be a symbol of strength and security for the community, and I am very excited to see this landmark project begin,” said Jody Butz, Regional Fire Chief, Regional Emergency Services. “For years to come, the Fort McKay Fire Department will continue to proudly serve their community and the region from their future new home.”

Construction will begin this month.
