KITCHENER — Three new murals near the entrance to Huron Natural Area are the first signs of a program being developed this year at the park.
The murals, by local Indigenous artists Luke Swinson, August Swinson and Tsista Kennedy, illustrate the artists’ different connections to the land. One is a landscape with a lake and tree-covered shores. One depicts a heron, its neck curving gracefully downwards. In the third, a huge turtle supports a forest of trees growing out of its back.
The murals are part of a new effort by the City of Kitchener to reach out to Indigenous people in the community and make park space more welcoming to them.
