The Opportunity

The Indigenous Engagement Unit in Regina, within the Ministry of Agriculture, is seeking a highly skilled, values-based leader for a two-year term as the Provincial Indigenous Engagement Specialist.

Reporting to the Senior Indigenous Advisor, this position will advise and support senior and executive leadership on a range of related program and policy issues. You will research and consult with internal and external stakeholders to develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate, policies and programs, and review regulations and projects to enhance programs such as the Next Policy Framework.

Our candidate will be strategic, have superior interpersonal and communication skills, and effectively lead teams of diverse backgrounds. Utilizing your superior skills in facilitation, conflict management, negotiation, and consensus building you will foster positive working relationships that build, maintain, enhance, and strengthen existing and new partnerships (regionally and provincially), and advance the agriculture sector within First Nations organizations, Métis Locals, and with the First Nation and Métis farmers, ranchers, and agri-businesses. Your outstanding Indigenous engagement skills will lead in building an awareness of Indigenous culture, history, and traditions.

Typically, the knowledge and abilities required for this position is obtained through a Master’s degree in any of the following: agriculture, Indigenous studies, leadership and management, business administration, policy and governance, and or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. You will be knowledgeable and competent in the following:

  • Policy development and research methodologies;
  • Project Management;
  • Agricultural sector, trends, policies, acts and legislation;
  • Engagement practices and protocols involving (Elders, Knowledge Keepers, Chiefs, Indigenous organizations, and Indigenous people);
  • Indigenous and Treaty land inherent rights, Duty to Consult, 94 Calls to Action and Indigenous issues at the provincial and regional level, and
  • First Nation Governance models, Tribal Councils, Independent First Nations, Saskatchewan First Nations and Saskatchewan Métis Nations/locals.

This position will be required to travel therefore, a valid driver’s license is required. Knowledge of Indigenous language(s) within Saskatchewan is considered an asset, as well as knowledge and or work-related experience with government processes and relations.
