The Strathcona County Museum and Archives hosted an Indigenous artist gathering on Saturday, Sept. 20 to celebrate the renaming of one its Indigenous people’s gallery to Touches Earth, Echoing Sky Lodge.
Indigenous artists from the Edmonton area came to celebrate the occasion and showcase their art. The museum was turned into a market where Indigenous women artists sold their art and shared their stories. There were different types of handmade art and trinkets for sale, like beads, hand earrings made of bone, and dreamcatchers.
While guests explored the market, they were invited to check out the newly renamed Indigenous Peoples gallery, Touches Earth, Echoing Sky Lodge. Upon entering the gallery, a beautiful piece of stained glass illuminated a large mural by Indigenous artist and Edmonton city councillor Aaron Paquette. The gallery features different kinds of art from Indigenous artists, and the museum hopes to rotate art from different artists through the exhibit.
