Aamjiwnaang First Nation’s chief and council have initiated legal action against a company they say is responsible for polluting the air, water and soil in their community, leading to multiple evacuation orders.
The lawsuit filed March 27 accuses INEOS Styrolution Canada Ltd., INEOS Styrolution America LLC, INEOS Styrolution Group GmbH and INEOS Quattro Holdings Ltd., of depriving the First Nation of the use and enjoyment of its lands.
It alleges the company has been operating with outdated equipment and has failed to make necessary upgrades to protect the First Nation, whose band council office is located 100 metres from the INEOS production facility.
