Anishinabek Nation and Canada to commemorate historic Anishinabek Nation Governance Agreement milestone

ANISHINABEK NATION HEAD OFFICE (September 28, 2022)— Anishinabek Nation Grand Council Chief and leadership from the five (5) signatory First Nations will be joined by the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, to commemorate in-person the signing of the Anishinabek Nation Governance Agreement, which took place virtually earlier this year. The Anishinabek Nation Governance Agreement recognizes Anishinabek control over governance and the law-making powers of the signatory First Nations in key areas. The signatory First Nations will make their own decisions about how their elections will be held, who their citizens are, and how their governments will operate, as well as how best to protect and promote Anishinabek languages and culture supported by increased funding. The Agreement marks an important step for the signatory First Nations to move out from under the Indian Act.
