Press Release
April 30, 2025
The Department of Community Services is inviting interested applicants to apply for a hands-on Fish Skin Tanning Workshop taking place in Apex from May 20 to 30, 2025.
Led by instructor Janey Chang, this workshop will teach participants how to tan fish skins using traditional and natural methods. Over the course of the program, participants will learn how to clean and prepare skins, explore natural dyeing with materials like indigo, and craft their own leather goods, such as small pouches or wallets.
The workshop will be held at Abe Okpik Hall in Apex. Space is limited to 10–15 participants during the first week, with the option to include additional participants in the second week. A community open house will be held on the final day.
Those interested in participating should email sealskin@gov.nu.ca. If the number of applicants exceeds the available space, names will be drawn.
For more information, please contact sealskin@gov.nu.ca.
