CanWEA Welcomes the Announcement of a 200 MW Wind Power Project in Quebec

Montreal, December 21, 2015 – The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) welcomes today’s announcement by the Quebec Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Pierre Arcand, and the Minister responsible for Native Affairs, Geoffrey Kelley, on the progress made towards a new 200 megawatt (MW) wind project. The partnership between the Quebec government, Hydro‑Québec, the Innu nation, and member companies of Quebec’s wind industry is expected to bring investments of nearly half a billion dollars in addition to generating significant spinoff benefits for the community.

CanWEA welcomes this step in the progression of the project announced by the Quebec government in May 2013. “This project is an important milestone that will enable Quebec to meet the objectives of its 2006-2015 energy strategy and provide a bridge for Quebec’s wind industry into the next energy policy,” said Jean-Frédérick Legendre, CanWEA’s Regional Director, Quebec. “The government can count on the full collaboration of the industry to ensure the success of this project.”

The wind industry employs 5,000 people in various regions in Quebec, and the sector’s development generated investments of $10 billion in the last decade. Wind power is cost‑competitive with any source of electricity generation that can be commissioned at this time. For Quebec to consolidate its position as a wind energy leader in North America and meet its new renewable power needs, CanWEA proposes that Quebec’s next energy policy provide for the construction and commissioning of new wind projects for domestic and export markets.
