Public Service Announcement
Carving sales at Makigiarvik will be open to the public on Fridays between 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. in the facility’s reception area.
Makigiarvik’s carving program grants access to Inuit tradition through arts, and provides inmates with a means to earn money and support their families during their incarceration.
Traditional arts have shown to be therapeutic for carvers at the facility, and inmates from all regions are enrolled in the program. Time spent in the carving program gives inmates a chance to talk, create, share ideas and styles with one another, and learn together as a group.
Proceeds go directly to the carver and to an inmate-welfare account that is used to help cover extracurricular expenses for use at the facility.
The money earned from sales can help carvers save and plan for their future after release.
Credit card and cash are accepted.
