West Nipissing’s Indigenous population has increased by just over 21% in the past five years.
According to Statistics Canada, the 2021 Census shows the municipality’s Indigenous population is 2,810.
That’s up 495 people from the 2016 Census.
It’s also 19.7 % of the municipality’s total population in last year’s count.
Across the country, Statistics Canada says the 2021 Census counted 1.8 million Indigenous people.
The Indigenous population grew by 9.4% from 2016 to 2021, surpassing the growth of the non-Indigenous population over the same period (+5.3%).
