City and community partners celebrate National Indigenous History Month throughout June, including National Indigenous Peoples Day June 21

(Barrie, ON) – The month of June is recognized as National Indigenous History Month, and June 21 as National Indigenous Peoples Day.

Throughout the month, the City of Barrie is supporting and collaborating with community partners to provide opportunities to learn about and celebrate the rich heritage, diverse cultures and significant contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

Some programs and events to celebrate National Indigenous History Month and Peoples Day include:

• Tipi Gathering with the Barrie Native Friendship Centre at Sunnidale Park on June 2 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
• Flag Raising at City Hall on June 2 at 2 p.m.
• Indigenous Peoples Celebration Day at Sunnidale Park on June 17 from 12 to 3 p.m. with the Barrie Native Friendship Centre, including family-friendly activities, face painting, teachings and more.
• Indigenous Film Feature at Meridian Place on June 21 at dusk (approximately 9:30 p.m.), with a family activity hosted by the Barrie Public Library from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
• Pop-up at Open Air Dunlop in downtown Barrie on June 24 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with information about community resources and more.
• Seven Grandfathers Teachings with Elder Jeff Monague at the Barrie Public Library Downtown Branch on June 24 at 1 p.m. followed by performances by Indigenous musicians from 2 to 4 p.m. in the rooftop garden.
