Education Officer

Full-time, 2 Year Term Possibility of Extension

It is the mission of Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI) to provide Inuit-specific programs that contribute to the health and wellbeing of Inuit, and to encourage and support similar programs for Inuit across the country. With over 30 years of highly successful experience in crafting the design, development, and delivery of a wide range of effective, client-centered services, TI continues to deliver quality programs and services that directly benefit our growing urban Inuit population.

TI’s Education Program serves to educate stakeholders at Provincial Learning Ministries towards a more knowledgeable approach to the design and framework for Inuit Education in Ontario.

TI is searching for an Education Officer who will play a key role in ensuring Ontario education objectives are met and will promote education equity, system access, and accountability to Inuit living in Ontario. The work of the Education Officer will be to promote Inuit culture within the school environment, assist with educator awareness and understanding of urban Inuit and culture, and help review Inuit-specific curriculum revisions. The Education Officer will collaborate with the Ministry of Education and Ontario Public School Boards and share information about issues and activities in the elementary/secondary education system related to Inuit education.

Key responsibilities of the position include:

  • Clarifies, interprets, and promotes Ministry’s business plan, Inuit vision of education, education programs and initiatives, Ministry legislation and policies, TI’s education objectives, and provincial standards and curriculum
  • Monitors school systems to ensure school boards are accountable to the standards of education and to the Inuit community
  • Coordinates information sessions for parents and/or Inuit community groups to support TI’s initiatives
  • Works with school boards to address their school needs and ensuring their school environments are culturally safe and respectful of Inuit
  • Monitors progress of schools towards the effective implementation of Inuit related education policies and programs
  • Develops and implements a plan for the cyclical review of school effectiveness
  • Supports efforts to build the knowledge and awareness of Inuit histories, cultures, perspectives, and contributions within school boards at every level
  • Participates on district committees and task forces to review, develop, and validate education policy and curriculum
  • Works closely with Aboriginal Education Advisory Committees/Councils to assist in developing Board Action Plans
  • Collaborates and liaisons with local Inuit communities, organizations, students, and families

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will understand the socio-economic issues impacting Inuit education in the province. The candidate will have knowledge of Inuit traditional teachings (IQ) and carry themselves according to those teachings. They will also have familiarity of education agencies, programs, curriculum development and supports for the Inuit community. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, presentation skills, relationship building skills and organizational skills are necessary.

The ability to coordinate and participate in the delivery of presentations and other engagement activities, and use computers (Microsoft Office, e-mail, and Internet) are all requirements of the position.

Post-secondary education in a relevant field is required; a minimum of two-year experience in education, community development or another relevant field is required. A combination of related education and experience may be accepted. Fluency in English is required and the ability to communicate in Inuktitut is an asset.
