The Fort McKay First Nation (FMFN) is hoping to develop an incorporated oilsands lease located 20 kilometres north of the community.
The First Nation has been a long-time lease holder of the area and first announced its plans to develop the site on Friday.
“We want to responsibly develop this asset and secure the benefits for our community while it still holds value,” said Alvaro Pinto, the newly appointed CEO of oilsands development and sustainability for FMFN, during a Monday interview.
“The world is undergoing critical change in energy consumption and looking for clean energy elsewhere,” he said. “Maybe in 50 years the need for oil will not be there anymore.”
Pinto said the First Nation has been considering developing the lease for years.
