KINGSTON — The company previously contracted to help the city with its reconciliation efforts is to again be hired to lead local efforts to address Indigenous issues.
City council voted Tuesday night to award a $182,500 sole-source contract to First Peoples Group to provide support to the city’s cultural projects, including the ongoing Engage for Change, Your Stories, Our Histories, the new Cataraqui River bridge naming, intergovernmental relations, and city council support and staff training.
Although there was an effort by some councillors to have the awarding of the contract delayed to see if a local bidder is available, most councillors were eager to not only have the truth and reconciliation work move forward but to have the work led by an Indigenous-owned company.
The importance of this contract was heightened for some as Kingston was Canada’s first capital and home of Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada’s first prime minister.
