KRG: Adding More Cheer to the Christmas Season

Kuujjuaq, QC, December 6th2016 – The Kativik Regional Government (KRG) and the Makivik Corporation help make Christmas dinner a little more affordable in Nunavik communities. Until December 31st under the Food and Other Essentials Program, Nunavimmiut will be able to buy whole turkeys and hams (over 2.5 kg) sold at local grocery stores for half the regular price.
“We’re always looking at ways to help reduce the high cost of living. It is especially pleasing to be able to offer this assistance at this time of year when we’re gathering with family and friends,” stated Makivik President Jobie Tukkiapik and KRG Chairperson Jennifer Munick.
The objectives of the Food and Other Essentials Program include promoting healthy eating and lowering the prices of many common store-bought food and household products. Funding for Nunavik Cost-of-Living Measures is paid by the Québec government pursuant to an agreement signed with the Makivik Corporation and the KRG. Makivik is the development corporation mandated to manage the heritage funds of the Inuit of Nunavik provided for under the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement. Makivik’s role includes the administration and investment of these funds and the promotion of economic growth by providing assistance for the creation of Inuit-operated businesses in Nunavik. Makivik promotes the preservation of Inuit culture and language as well as the health, welfare, relief of poverty, and education of Inuit in the communities.
The KRG is a non-ethnic public organization created in 1978, under the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement. The organization has jurisdiction over nearly the entire territory of Québec north of the 55th parallel in areas such as municipal matters, transportation, the environment, policing, employment, labour training, income security, childcare services, renewable resources, land-use planning, civil security and economic development.
