Medical travel ongoing despite Manitoba wildfires

Press Release

June 5, 2025

Medical travel to Winnipeg continues despite the current wildfires. Referrals have not been suspended, and the boarding home continues to operate as usual. At this time, there is no directive to rebook or postpone medical travel appointments.

Typically, when boarding homes reach capacity, hotel accommodations are used to support medical travelers. However, due to the ongoing wildfire evacuations in Manitoba, hotel availability is currently extremely limited and rooms may not be available. While the boarding home is not currently at capacity, the Medical Travel team is actively managing each case to ensure GN medical travelers remain safe and prioritized.

The GN continues to coordinate closely with patients on a case-by-case basis. If you have questions about your upcoming medical travel, please reach out to MedicalTravelInquiry@gov.nu.ca or visit Medical Travel | Government of Nunavut.

The GN is monitoring the situation closely and will provide timely updates to Nunavummiut as needed. Coordination with Manitoba authorities remains active as the situation evolves.

If you notice smoke in your community, take precautions to protect your health by visiting the GN website for tips and safety information.
