The countdown is on to a controversial Commons vote today that would launch a committee probe into the Liberal government’s COVID-19 response measures. Opposition parties are poised to approve the motion. Canadian Press reports that it raises a thorny question about slack: how much should the public grant to the government as the opposition tries to hold it accountable, given that experts’ opinions changed by the day and the science has not always been clear.
Major health players are getting their backs up over the wording of the motion. Pfizer Canada is the latest to warn against the motion’s consequences, expressing worries about how commercially sensitive information would be treated: “We are deeply concerned with the implications and likely unintended consequences should this motion receive the support of enough parliamentarians.” PPE manufacturers have also said they’re worried about disclosing their federal government contracts.
