New departments designed to improve program and service delivery

Press Release

Iqaluit, Nunavut (March 31, 2025) – The Government of Nunavut (GN) today affirmed its commitment to improving program and service delivery through the successful realignment of government departments into the Department of Community Services (CS) and the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Nunavut (TIN).

This departmental realignment fulfills a priority of the GN’s 2023-2026 Business Plan.

“The launch of these new departments reflects our commitment to improving access to government programs and services for all Nunavummiut,” said Premier P.J. Akeeagok. “This realignment ensures that our government is better positioned to meet the needs of all Nunavummiut, businesses, and government departments.”

The Department of Community Services, led by Minister David Akeeagok, will deliver programs through three branches: Supporting Communities, Supporting Economies, and Service Nunavut. These branches reflect a renewed focus on coordination, streamlined delivery, and meeting the needs of Nunavummiut. Supporting Communities includes emergency management, land use planning, and recreation. Supporting Economies leads economic development, including mining, fisheries, tourism, and cultural industries. Service Nunavut will improve public access by integrating motor vehicles, consumer affairs, safety services, and government liaison offices into a more convenient and coordinated service.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Nunavut, led by Minister David Joanasie, will deliver critical operational support across government. The department is responsible for infrastructure development, transportation services, information technology, petroleum products, and procurement. With a focus on modernization and coordination, the department plays a vital role in ensuring the GN’s systems, spaces, and supply chains are safe, reliable, and responsive to the needs of Nunavummiut.

“The realignment of these two departments will maximize our ability to support communities, grow local economies, and deliver services that matter to Nunavummiut,” said Minister David Akeeagok. “With the addition of Service Nunavut, we’re streamlining operations and improving access, creating a more efficient structure to deliver programs and resources across the territory.”

“This realignment will enhance our ability to deliver client-centred solutions,” said Minister David Joanasie. “For my department, that means a stronger focus on tackling transportation and infrastructure challenges efficiently and effectively, while ensuring the systems that support government operations are modern, reliable, and responsive to the needs of Nunavummiut.”

The GN extends its gratitude to all staff involved in the transition for their dedication and hard work in ensuring a seamless realignment. The government will continue to refine its operations with a focus on improving service delivery and responding to the needs of Nunavummiut.
