Opinion: Buffalo Avenue is a far more fitting name than Dewdney – Regina Leader-Post

Renaming Dewdney Avenue, Buffalo Avenue would honour and uphold values important to Indigenous peoples, write members of Decolonizing Relations.

Beneath the tragic shadow of the COVID-19 virus, and in the wake of George Floyd’s death by a Minneapolis police officer, 2020 will also be remembered for the incredible empowered call for justice from Black people and Indigenous people. We watch as racist historical statues are toppled, and settler allies come forward in support of fighting against injustices, both past and present.

Even here at home, opportunities to acknowledge a racist history are evident. Discussions to remove the John A. Macdonald statue from Victoria Park have increased in urgency for the mayor and members of city council as Regina residents weigh in on the issue, thanks largely to a call-to-action from local Indigenous activists.

If now is the time for revising history for the sake of justice, we would like to share another ongoing campaign for just historical change.
