Hundreds show support for Mi’kmaq fishers, Oct. 19
Twenty-one years ago, the Supreme Court, via the Marshall decision, re-affirmed an 18th-century Treaty right of the Mi’kmaq to fish for what the court called a “moderate livelihood.”
While the prime minister may now be appalled at the violence being done to Mi’kmaq fishers in Nova Scotia, his government, his cabinet and Conservative and Liberal governments before them, have for decades kicked the problem down the road.
Following never-ending frustration, the Mi’kmaq gave ample warning that they intended to establish their own controlled fishery with environmental regulations and monitoring.
