Powwows open doors for dialogue – Downsview Advocate

October 31, 2025

The 1st Annual City of Brampton and Algoma University Traditional Pow Wow in partnership with The Indigenous Network on September 25 was a celebration of Anishinaabe culture, traditions and community spirit through drums, song, dress and dance. The powwow builds on the university’s 20-year legacy of hosting student-led initiatives that began in 2005 at its Salt Ste. Marie campus.

Paul Sayers, director of Makwa Waakaa’igan, Algoma University says that the idea behind this powwow was to “expand relationships with the indigenous Community.”

The powwow had 30 vendors displaying traditional crafts like beadwork, candles, handmade soaps and dreamcatchers.   Traditionally, powwows have served as events for culture sharing, socializing and community building. To the attendees, they offer vistas into the life of the Indigenous Peoples.
