Red Dress Day being marked by events across B.C. – CBC

May 05, 2026

National day, held on May 5, highlights issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls

Communities throughout B.C. will mark Red Dress Day on Tuesday with marches and processions, bringing attention to the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQ+ people.

The national day of awareness comes more than 15 years after Métis artist Jaime Black created an art installation of red dresses hanging in public spaces, to serve as a reminder of Indigenous women and girls who are missing or have been murdered.

Statistics Canada has previously found that, between 2009 and 2021, the rate of homicide against Indigenous women and girls was six times higher than their non-Indigenous counterparts.
