Program

The conference kicks off with an Opening Reception with exhibitors on Tuesday, September 23 at 6 pm. Pre-Conference Workshops
1 Day Workshops – Tuesday, September 23, 2014
Registration is limited to 40 participants per workshop.

There are two concurrent pre-conference workshops – please see descriptions below.
The pre-conference workshops are not included in the conference activities. If you would like to attend one of the two workshops, you must register and pay for this separately to the conference.

Governance and the First Nations Health Director

Would you like to know more about governance, your role and responsibilities in governance, and how to make positive changes? If so, then this workshop that will enhance your capacity and put you on the road to improvements.

This one-day workshop uses a Guide and Workbook recently developed by the First Nations Health Managers Association to address governance topics from a Health Director perspective. Participants will engage in practical exercises that address relevant issues. Using an interactive approach, this workshop will cover the critical elements a Health Director should be aware of and things they should be able to do to improve the effectiveness of health governance for their First Nation. This workshop will help participants achieve the following objectives:

1. Participants will gain a better understanding of the critical elements of governance: roles and responsibilities; planning; policies; finance and information; people, governance operations; health and governance and their role in the facilitation of governance activities.
2. Participants will be able to recommend, facilitate and apply governance tools and also develop problem-solving, decision-making, and strategic planning skills.

The workshop objectives will assist you to enhance your capacity as a Health Director to support improvements in health services governance activities.

Change the Way You Deal With Change!
Did you know that 70% of all major change efforts in organizations fail? Why do they fail?
Because organizations often do not follow tried and tested approaches that can help overcome fear and resistance and increase their chances of success.

If you are in a leadership or management role, then you are in the business of change.

Most change management initiatives fail, and it isn’t due to project management – it’s often due to a failure to understand the human side of change. People react, respond and adjust to change in a sequence of predictable stages. However, with a solid change management methodology that incorporates best practices, it is possible to increase the strategic chances of success.

Planning for change is beneficial for any of the following organizational realities: restructuring, HR policy changes, IT projects, moving offices, new leadership, organizational culture changes, etc.

This is a unique opportunity for First Nations Health Managers to increase their ability to effectively lead change and meet the growing challenges of health organizations. This full day workshop will focus on the best practices in Change Management. Using powerful and proven techniques, you will explore the underlying dynamics of change and transition and will incorporate several of the leading change models.

At the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

• Understand the predictable stages of individual change
• Recognize the root cause of emotional responses to change
• Alleviate adverse reactions and manage different types of resistance
• Increase the change resilience of individuals, teams and organizations
• Know the key components of a change plan
• Effectively use a variety of tools and resources

Managers, leaders and aspiring leaders who work with change on an organizational, project or personal level.

If you or your team members struggle with accepting change, initiating change or managing change, this workshop will uncover the roadblocks and explore leading techniques and strategies that will “change the way you deal with change”.
