Research Assistant

It is the mission of Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI) to broadly provide Inuit-specific programs that contribute to the health and wellbeing of Inuit and to encourage and support similar programs for Inuit across the country. Reporting to the Senior Policy and Program Advisor, the Research Assistant supports the execution of the Qanuippitaa? National Inuit Health Survey (“QNIHS”). The Research Assistant sits on the QNIHS technical table and helps by collaborating on the content development, planning for the survey’s implementation and communicates the project’s goals and objectives to the Inuit community in Ottawa. The candidate also builds and maintains relationships with other QNIHS members and participates in Working Groups, various sub-committees and partnership meetings in the National Capital Region.

Job Responsibilities

  • Mentor other Community members who express interest in the field of research and may attend conferences and other events as a representative of TI.
  • Research and write briefing notes about topics such as, but are not limited to, different sampling methodologies and strategies used by other land claim regions, recruitment and implementation strategies and collaborate on the content development using a strength-based approach
  • Co-develop a communication strategy and related materials for public distribution and assist in outreach activities to educate the Inuit population and general public about the project
  • Support the development of a framework and best practices for culturally safe survey delivery and participate in the implementation of the survey, including supporting community members
  • Provide analysis of services, to identify gaps, successes, and provide recommendations for improved services
  • Attend meetings, workshops and other engagements to collect participant feedback

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and Inuit culture, societal values, customs, and traditions. The ideal candidate should have knowledge of issues related to Inuit health and wellness.

Superior listening skills, attention to detail, excellent writing skills, typing and data entry skills.

The ability to travel out of town and to work occasional evenings and weekends as required.

Completion of community college or undergraduate degree in Research, Health and indigenous practice is preferred. One to two years of experience in conducting research, research analysis and writing reports in Healthcare/Indigenous studies is an asset. Previous experience in coordinating meetings, events and other engagement activities is an asset. Experience with group facilitation, community engagement and performing outreach activities is an asset.

Proficient use of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, video-conferencing platforms and electronic records management applications is required. Clear Vulnerable Sector Check with results acceptable to TI is required. Fluency in English is required and the ability to communicate in Inuktitut is a significant asset.

The Research Assistant will have a hybrid working environment. The candidate works in a comfortable TI’s office environment part-time. Travel within the city is required during survey distribution.
