Before Gananoque had its current name, before settlers arrived, before the world as we know it existed, there was a road – a path worn into the earth by the footsteps of the Haudenosaunee people, dating back to around 300 B.C.
Now, the Rotary Club of Gananoque wants to make sure that history is not forgotten.
Doug Bickerton last week made a delegation to Gananoque council on behalf of the Rotary Club, proposing the installation of two sidewalk plaques on King Street to commemorate the town’s first road.
The plaques, estimated at $6,000, would be placed near ‘The Umbrella’ public art installation and would highlight the Indigenous history of the region, in collaboration with the Mohawk Council of the Bay of Quinte.
