The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) hosting a five-day Mental Health First Aid Co-Facilitator Course. All SCO First Nations Chiefs and Councillors, Health Directors, Wellness Teams, and/or community members are welcome to attend this course.
Do you or someone on your team want to receive Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) facilitation skills? Your community members can be certified with the skills to support someone with a mental health concern.
SCO is sponsoring an opportunity for a five-day Certified MHFA for First Nations Co-Facilitators in Winnipeg. We invite potential candidates to apply by November 3, 2023. To register, please email Angela Myran: email@example.com
What is MHFA – First Nation Co-Facilitation?
MHFA is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem, experiencing the worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. Just like physical first aid is provided until medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA is given until appropriate support is found or until the crisis is resolved.
How MHFA helps:
MHFA engages confidently where a person may be a danger to themselves or others. It provides help to prevent the mental health problem from developing into a more serious state; it promotes the recovery of good mental health; and it provides comfort to a person experiencing a mental health problem.
SCO is hosting a five-day co-facilitator course with the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s evidenced-based approach, which has been developed by First Nations in Canada. Each community can send two individuals that have front line and/or mental health experience and who are willing to complete an application. To find more information about becoming a co-facilitator, please visit: https://www.mhfa.ca/en/course-type/first-nations-co-facilitator
Training will be held in Winnipeg, Manitoba with potential dates in 2024. Your community will be responsible to provide travel (to and return from Winnipeg), food, and hotel accommodations.
