Press Release
20 January 2026
The Calgary Fire Department (CFD), in partnership with The City of Calgary’s Indigenous Relations Office, is hosting its third Indigenous Firefighting Camp from May 1-3, 2026. This camp is aimed at providing a unique opportunity for Indigenous individuals interested in pursuing a rewarding career in firefighting.
The camp is open to individuals of all genders who are First Nations, Métis, Urban Indigenous and Inuit. Applicants must be 18 years of age before the start of camp and are not currently in the firefighter recruitment process.
“CFD Indigenous Camp provides Indigenous individuals aged 18 and older with the opportunity to experience life as a firefighter,” shared Assistant Deputy Chief and Indigenous Firefighting Camp Executive Coordinator, Thomas Jukes.
“Participants get to build confidence, leadership, teamwork, and fire safety skills that they can bring back to their families and communities. The camp also creates meaningful connections between CFD members and participants, allowing us to learn from each other, and identify better ways CFD can support Indigenous communities.”
Participants will be introduced to the skills and knowledge required to become a firefighter through the direction of firefighter mentors and hands-on experiences including using firefighting equipment and tools such as the jaws of life, putting out a car fire, simulating search and rescue and forcible entry.
