The NCTR invites Canadian youth to share their vision of Reconciliation

Press Release

November 20 2023,

TREATY 1 TERRITORY (WINNIPEG) — The Imagine a Canada 2023-2024 program invites Canadian youth from Kindergarten through to Grade 12 and CÉGEP to envision a Canada Reconciled. Since 2016, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) has received more than 1,400 submissions and has worked with thousands of students to realize their hopes and dreams of a Canada they wish to see.

Youth can participate in the art and essay stream (requires submission of an art piece, essay, or other representation to express their vision of a reconciled Canada and what they hope others will learn from their submission) or the project stream (requires submission of a plan on how their project will address Reconciliation in their community or school).

Up to 12 projects will be selected from the art and essay stream to be included in an art booklet showcasing their work and message and up to 15 projects will be selected from the project stream to receive a cash prize and recognition in an art booklet.

At the end of the school year, a national celebration will be held to honour projects selected from both the arts and essay stream and the project stream.

Submissions for both streams must be sent by 11:59 p.m. CT on January 26, 2024. For more information about the program, visit the NCTR website.

Quick Facts

The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) hosted by the University of Manitoba was created to preserve the memory of Canada’s Residential School system and legacy, not just for a few years, but forever. It is the responsibility of the NCTR to steward and share the truths of Survivors’ experiences in a respectful way and to work with Indigenous and non-Indigenous educators, researchers, communities, decision-makers and the general public to support the ongoing work of truth, reconciliation and healing across Canada and beyond.
