Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. says that two presumptive cases of COVID-19 at its Meliadine gold mine in Nunavut have since been confirmed by followup lab tests that came back positive.
“Agnico Eagle confirms that on October 24, 2020, it received official notice from an accredited laboratory in Quebec, confirming that each … have tested positive for COVID-19,” the company said in a statement released on Monday, Oct. 26.
The company announced the two presumptive cases last week, on Oct. 22.
Following the initial test results, both workers were removed from the mine site and potential contacts with those workers were placed in isolation.
The first worker tested positive at the mine site during a random testing exercise on Oct. 17. Twelve people identified as potential contacts were put into isolation at the mine site and later flown out.
