Yukon and Carcross/Tagish First Nation sign land development MOU

WHITEHORSE—A memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed today by Premier Darrell Pasloski and Carcross/Tagish First Nation Chief Dan Cresswell confirms both governments support recreational land and infrastructure development in the Carcross/Tagish First Nation Traditional Territory.

“There are a number of potential projects identified in the Carcross/Tagish Traditional Territory that will provide investment and growth in the local economy and create jobs and business opportunities,” Pasloski said. “I am pleased to sign this memorandum of understanding as it formalizes and signifies the strengthening of an already successful working relationship.”

The memorandum of understanding outlines potential projects that the two governments will explore in the coming months. Projects range from wilderness tourism opportunities and remote access recreational property development on First Nation and public lands, to improvements to the Carcross dock and marina. The memorandum of understanding will remain in effect for five years.

“The Carcross/Tagish First Nation is pleased to confirm the ongoing working relationship with the Yukon government,” Cresswell said. “We look forward to examining the feasibility of these interesting projects and sharing these findings with our citizens and Yukon.”

The two parties indicated options for further developing the Carcross/Tagish area including having remote access recreational lots available for lottery by August 2014.

Pasloski added that any projects identified to move forward beyond initial, exploratory work will enter the normal application and public review process.
