RCMP Foundation Launches Youth Program in Eskasoni

Press Release

December 9, 2016

On Friday, December 9th, The RCMP Foundation, in partnership with RBC and The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Nova Scotia, will launch TechConnect: Connecting Kids with Cops through Technology at Eskasoni Elementary and Middle School.

The RCMP Foundation’s TechConnect program works in partnership with the local RCMP Detachments to uniquely leverage the power of technology for social good.

The program connects select youth with technology through the mentorship of a local RCMP Member. The RCMP Foundation provides laptop computers or notebooks and comprehensive programming including mentorship, training and guidance support. A new computer is provided to students entering the program. The laptop is earned based on participation. It is meant to assist students in completing research and school assignments, nurture creativity and support students to be included in safe, respectful social interaction among their peers through the use of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.

With the support of the program donor, RBC, and partners, such as Nova Scotia RCMP and the school Principal Dawn Stevens, TechConnect reinforces staying safe on the Internet, preventing cyber-bullying, and practicing good etiquette. The program encourages students to be active contributors to their schools and communities. The intent is to instill hope and confidence ensuring youth can reach their potential.

The launch will take place on December 9th at noon in the Eskasoni Elementary and Middle School Library.
