Ontario Appoints Associate Chair of Ontario Parole Board

Ontario has appointed Karen Restoule as Associate Chair of the Ontario Parole Board (OPB), effective April 5, 2017.

Before her appointment, Ms. Restoule was vice-chair of the Licence Appeal Tribunal and a member of the Ontario Civilian Police Commission. She also led the Indigenous Services and French Language Services at the Safety, Licencing Appeals and Standards Tribunals Ontario (SLASTO).

Ms. Restoule previously held positions with the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services both as a consultant addressing systemic discrimination within the correctional system and as a probation and parole officer in the province’s northern region.

A member of Dokis First Nation (Anishinabek Nation), Ms. Restoule is a graduate of the University of Ottawa’s French Common Law Program.

Quick Facts

The OPB promotes public safety by deciding on the return of offenders to the community through supervised conditional release.
As an independent quasi-judicial administrative tribunal, the OPB has the sole authority to grant, deny or revoke parole in Ontario.
The OPB is part of SLASTO, a group of independent tribunals that resolve and decide matters relating to human and animal protection, public safety and the public interest—including compensation claims and licensing, policing, parole, fire safety and animal care orders.
