Canada must ratify UN declaration – Times Colonist

It is 10 years since the United Nations passed the Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People. Canada refused to ratify it.

Canada took until last year to merely remove its objector status as a nation. But nothing has changed in 150 years in the way in which First Nations are treated in our country.

The Liberal prime minister makes nice noises about nation-to-nation relations but continues to treat them as second- or third class citizens, as we have for all those years.

It has been clearly demonstrated repeatedly that we, as a country, continue to fund Aboriginal children’s education at 40 per cent less than non-aboriginal children. Why? What could possibly justify that?

The Canadian Human Rights Tribunal has found the government guilty of failing in its duty. The Canadian government continues to fight to avoid its responsibilities in the courts. Why?
