A multi-phased research project and exhibit at Casa invites visitors to learn more about Blackfoot culture – particularly how the community raises its children.
“Elders of the Future” was created and curated by a multigenerational and multicultural team, including members of the Blackfoot community, coming together in a research project involving Opokaa’sin Early Intervention Society and the University of Lethbridge Institute for Child and Youth Studies.
The exhibit at Casa displays traditional Blackfoot song, dance, art, photos and stories.
Jan Newberry, U of L anthropology professor involved with the I-CYS, is involved in tracking the parenting values of communities who have an oral tradition rather than a written one.
In terms of “Elders of the Future,” the child-rearing values of Blackfoot and other Indigenous cultures were collected through the use of photography acting as a starting point for further discussion.
