Vancouver BC- The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls will have a two day Community Hearing in Thompson, Manitoba as part of the Truth Gathering Process.
Dates: Tuesday, March 20 and Wednesday, March 21, 2018
Attending: Commissioner Michèle Audette
The need for the National Inquiry to hear truths and gather testimony from northern Manitoba was identified in October 2017. This is the second Community Hearing to be held in the province. In Manitoba, 160 families and survivors are registered to share their truth. So far, 86 testimonies have been collected in the province as part of the Truth Gathering Process.
There are approximately 1350 families and survivors, from across the country, who have voluntarily registered to participate in the Truth Gathering Process. The National Inquiry has collected more than 700 testimonies about Indigenous woman, girls, and LGBTQ2S people from families of the heart who have lost a loved one and/or from survivors of violence.
The Commissioners’ mandate is to examine and report on the systemic causes of all forms of violence against Indigenous women, girls and LGBTQ2S people in Canada by looking at patterns and underlying factors. The mandate also includes examining institutional practices and policies implemented in response to violence experienced by Indigenous women and girls, including examining police investigation practices and responses, as part of this public investigation.
