Press Release
November 18, 2024
In response to the growing challenge of homelessness and limited shelter capacity in Yellowknife, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has introduced an On-the-Land Camp initiative. This new initiative will offer safe, stable accommodations and essential support services for people experiencing homelessness, providing much-needed support as we enter winter.
Yellowknife’s emergency shelters are currently operating beyond capacity, increasing the risk that residents will be without a safe place to stay and increasing concerns about safety and overcrowding. The On-the-Land Camp is designed to alleviate pressure on the city’s shelter system by offering an alternative, abstinence-based environment focused on stability and wellness. This shelter option provides another choice for individuals whose needs may differ from those services offered by emergency shelters and is in addition to funding the GNWT has recently provided to the Salvation Army to bring eight additional shelter beds online.
The development of the camp involved engagement with unhoused residents and collaboration with non-government partners. Many individuals expressed interest in participating in programs that are away from the downtown core and based on abstinence principles. The camp also incorporates key findings from the GNWT’s Alcohol Strategy. This initiative forms a crucial part of the GNWT’s broader Homelessness Strategy, which aims to expand access to transitional and supportive housing.
Operated by a local NGO, the On-the-Land Camp will provide programming on site, including 24/7 emergency medical support. Counselling will be available two days a week, and cultural programming will be offered three days a week, with flexibility to adapt to resident interests and needs. Residents who wish to join the camp can apply independently or with the help of service providers. Applications are available at the Integrated Service Delivery (ISD) office located at 4510 50th Avenue, Yellowknife.
