Tahltan Nation receives confirmation Newmont will follow Section 7 Agreement

Press Release

Tahltan Leadership remains committed to the spirit of the Section 7 process alongside our industry partners and the Province to ensure that all projects within our Territory, including the proposed Red Chris Block Cave transition, align with our Tahltan Values, Rights, and decision-making processes.

While the Province has identified Red Chris as a priority, we emphasize that this prioritization must respect the framework of the DRIPA Section 7 Joint-Decision-Making Agreement. This agreement, established between our Tahltan Nation and the Province of British Columbia, ensures that any decisions impacting our land, way of life and people are made with our free, prior, and informed consent.

We acknowledge and appreciate Newmont’s written commitment to this process and their recognition that Tahltan consent cannot be rushed. The integrity of our decision-making process is paramount, and Tahltan Leadership will continue working diligently to ensure that all considerations—including environmental, cultural, social, and economic factors—are given the time and respect they deserve.

Our collective future depends on maintaining strong partnerships built on transparency, trust and shared benefits. While unilateral decisions made by the Province would have been the practice of the past, this cannot be the approach for our current situation nor for the future. Decisions must be discussed and made with the Tahltan Nation first, to reflect a true partnership. We will continue to engage with our people, facilitating strong governance structures, and ensure that the best interests of our Tahltan Nation remain at the heart of every decision.
