Summary:
The Federal Indian Day Schools (McLean) Class Action Settlement includes compensation for those who attended a Federal Indian Day School that was established, funded, controlled, and managed by the Government of Canada between January 1, 1920, and the school’s date of closure or transfer from Canada’s control and suffered harm as a consequence of their attendance. Nearly 700 federally operated Indian Day Schools are eligible under this settlement.
The claim submission period under the Federal Indian Day Schools (McLean) Class Action Settlement closed on January 13, 2023. No new claims can be accepted. Class Counsel for the Federal Indian Day School Class Action, Gowling WLG (Canada), has informed the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) that approximately 17,700 claims remain unprocessed due to missing information or documentation.
If you have submitted a claim but have not received compensation, your claim may be incomplete. The Claim Administrator has extended the deadline to submit missing information to June 27, 2025. Claims not updated by this deadline will be ineligible for compensation.
