MKO Calls on Manitoba Government to Extend “Your Way Home” across All Regions

Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MB – Today, Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) Inc. responds to the Provincial Government’s announcement that it has acquired 67 new housing units under the “Your Way Home” strategy. While MKO acknowledges this step toward ending homelessness, the scope of the investment falls far short of serving all Manitobans.
All 67 units are located in Winnipeg, leaving northern and remote municipalities—where per-capita homelessness rates exceed those of the south—without new housing options. This regional imbalance underscores a persistent southern bias in social services and affordable-housing investments, even though wraparound supports are equally vital to lasting success.
“Housing is more than a roof over one’s head; it is the cornerstone of health, education and economic opportunity,” said Grand Chief Garrison Settee. “I commend the Province for taking action, but it cannot stop at the city limits. Hundreds of Manitobans across the MKO region face overcrowding, sky-high rents and insecure living conditions. True progress demands that ‘Your Way Home’ reach every corner of Manitoba.”
MKO calls on the Government of Manitoba to:
- Expand the “Your Way Home” strategy to include northern and remote communities,
- Ensure funding for affordable housing units and essential wraparound services proportional to regional need, and
- Develop a transparent, province-wide plan that guarantees equitable access to safe, affordable homes for all Manitobans.
“By investing fairly across to every border of our province, we not only honour our shared responsibility but also strengthen the social and economic fabric of Manitoba,” added Grand Chief Settee. “We stand ready to work in partnership—and we expect the same commitment from the government.”
