New Fredericton development to expand affordable housing options

Press Release

July 17, 2025

FREDERICTON – A new public housing development on Fredericton’s north side will expand access to affordable housing in the region.

A 20-unit seniors complex on Charles Avenue is nearing completion, and is expected to start welcoming tenants this fall.

“That’s 20 new affordable living spaces for the capital region at a time when finding an affordable, secure place to live has become very challenging,” said David Hickey, minister responsible for the New Brunswick Housing Corporation. “For a long time, government had gotten out of the business of building new homes. Now it’s great to see some of these new public housing developments preparing to accept new tenants.”

There are more than 4,600 public housing units across the province for families, seniors and non-elderly singles; that total includes nearly 800 rural and Indigenous units.

Hickey recently announced the pending openings of 22 other living spaces at three new housing developments in Miramichi.

“We know the need for housing is great across the province, and we’re pleased to be expanding access to freshly built affordable housing with these new buildings,” said Hickey.

The New Brunswick Housing Corporation has a variety of housing programs for renters and property owners to help address the government’s affordability and housing commitments.

Work is underway on 127 additional public housing units at 13 sites across the province.
