It is my pleasure to present the Polar Medal for my first and last time as governor general.
And in a way, the timing feels right.
This medal honours extraordinary service to Arctic communities and to expanding our understanding of Canada’s North. In 2026, I cannot say strongly enough how vital this work is—how much it matters to our country and to our shared future.
For a long time, there was a disconnect between the needs of Arctic peoples and the decisions that shaped their lives, not to mention the legacy of colonialism.
Today, the Arctic is seen as a region of opportunity. Issues of security and sovereignty are coming to the forefront.
Which is why I want to thank you both, most sincerely and warmly, for the work you do.
Dr. Lackenbauer: thank you for your research on Arctic governance and for your commitment to security, notably as honorary lieutenant-colonel of the 1st Canadian Ranger Patrol Group.
Dr. Parenteau, thank you for championing the security, sovereignty and protection of the Arctic. And thank you for your role in the adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.
Congratulations!
