AMC Acknowledges Start of Claims Process for Historic $23 Billion First Nations Child and Family Services and Jordan’s Principle Settlement

Press Release

March 10, 2025

Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg – The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) acknowledges the opening of the first Claims Period for the First Nations Child and Family Services and Jordan’s Principle Settlement as a long-overdue step toward justice for First Nations children and families harmed by Canada’s discriminatory child welfare system.

“For far too long, First Nations children have been stolen from their families and placed into a system that was never meant to protect them,” said Grand Chief Kyra Wilson. “This settlement is an acknowledgment of the injustices our people have faced, but it cannot be the end of the conversation.”

While this settlement recognizes the past harms, AMC remains deeply concerned about the ongoing overrepresentation of First Nations children in government care. True justice requires systemic change, ensuring First Nations have full autonomy over child welfare and the resources to keep children within their families and Nations.

The first Claims Period is now open, allowing eligible First Nations children and caregiving family members to apply for compensation. AMC encourages all eligible First Nations citizens in Manitoba to access the compensation they are entitled to while continuing to hold Canada accountable for meaningful reform.
